Active Infrared Portable Traffic Counters

Cuesta Systems Active Infrared Portable Traffic Counters were developed and field tested by Cuesta System engineers working closely with the U.S. Forest Service volunteers who were actively involved supporting resource management programs through counting and interpretation of trail usage statistics.

Active infrared technology has been recognized as the most accurate and stable counting media since the USFS designed and manufactured the first mass produced battery powered units in the late 60's. These units proved to be dependable but were extremely power hungry and only lasted about 60 days in the field. Consequently, if they were not tended regularly, valuable time and data was lost. In addition, they were very bulky and required that a large battery case be buried in the ground. In spite of these shortcomings many of these units are still in service today. The reason is simple: active infrared counters are consistently more accurate in their counts and function better in various environmental conditions then passive infrared, seismic, inductive loops or other types of counters.

Until now, however, there has not been a successful breakthrough in active infrared technology that would offer the same reliability but with significantly longer battery life and less bulk. Our counters were designed to specifically answer these challenges. In a single integral case and using a system that incorporates revolutionary electronic and optical design improvements, our counters has satisfied our goal of developing an accurate low powered trail counter.

Portable Traffic
Controller RS 501

The RS 501 Portable Traffic Counter is an all weather, portable, battery powered counting device that utilizes active infrared technology to count trail an vehicular traffic in both remote and heavily frequented areas.

The RS 501 has been extensively field tested by the U.S. Forest Service and is recommended for purchase in USFS Pub #9423-2823-MTDC, April, 1994 "Trail Traffic Counters for Forest Service Trail Monitoring".

Unlike some other counters that merely use retrofitted circuitry in an old case, the RS 501 incorporates all new design and construction in the development of a counter with innovative improvements in circuitry and housing design. The counter operates on either 4 "C" alkaline or, optionally, 2 "C" lithium batteries. (The lithium option is offered for extreme cold counting conditions, e.g. snowmobile and cross country skier counting.)

The electronics, optics and power source are housed in a cast aluminum case and sealed with "O" rings for water tight integrity.

The counter and its reflector are easily installed on opposite sides of a trail or road up to 125 ft. apart using the peep sight and alignment feature. Once the counter is aligned and "locked down" only infrequent adjustments are required for long term operation.

The counter is finished in camouflage to minimize detection and, when installed using natural cover, offers adequate concealment for most applications. An optional special mount and vandal resistant steel enclosure are available for installations where wide open areas do not offer natural camouflage.

The counter can be reset externally and battery condition is monitored via a low battery indicator light.

The RS 501 emits an invisible infrared beam and counts silently as its beam is interrupted. Flying birds, falling leaves and other small objects will not trigger the counter.

The RS 501 can also be upgraded to allow for time and date of counts to be stored up to a year and later retrieved for statistical analysis.

Advanced
Portable Traffic
Controller TS 601

The TS 601 Portable Traffic Counter is an all weather advanced version of our extremely popular RS 501 counter and was designed to satisfy a need for a more detailed level of information regarding count activity than just total counts per counting episode.

It is a portable, battery powered counting device that utilizes active infrared technology to count trail and vehicular traffic in remote and heavily frequented areas. The count data is then stored and statistically sorted into various count groups for future retrieval and analysis. Up to one year of count data may be accumulated and sorted by the minute, hour, day week, a.m., p.m. and more. This data is accessed by using the TS 625 Interrogator, a pocket size retrieval device that, when plugged into the external connector of the TS 601, displays a menu of count data on a liquid crystal display. A single TS 625 Interrogator may be used to access data on several TS 601 counters within a specific geographic area and is sold separately.

The TS 601 is virtually identical in external appearance and offers the same counting features as the RS 501. * It operates on either 4 "C" alkaline or, optionally, 2 "C" lithium batteries. (The lithium option is offered for extreme cold counting conditions, e.g. snowmobile and cross country skier counting.)

The electronics, optics and power source are housed in a cast aluminum case and sealed with "O" rings for water tight integrity.

*The RS 501 can be upgraded to a TS 601 foe less than a fourth of the cost of a new TS 601. Call for details.
